Part 2: Pulmonary Rehabilitation: What Is It? (FAQs)

Resources

Can I take part in PR courses if I smoke?

How to stop smoking is a topic included in the PR programme. Since smoking is one of the main contributors to COPD cases and other lung conditions, it is vital to learn how to quit.

You do not necessarily need to quit smoking before taking the course, as the PR team will assist you with this if you want to quit. The PR team can refer you to smoking cessation services if you are happy for them to do so and help start your journey to quitting.

What topics are covered in PR?

Some topics and tasks covered during the PR programme may include:

  • Assistance with medicine
  • Stretching exercises to improve flexibility
  • Weight training to improve muscle strength and increase exercise endurance
  • Stress management and emotional support
  • How to maintain healthy nutrition
  • Guidance with home respiratory equipment, such as oxygen, airway clearance devices, and nebulisers3

Is PR available privately?

Yes, PR programmes are available privately and on the NHS.

Is there any support available for transport to PR courses?

It can depend on the area you live in.

Some programme organisers can arrange transport on your behalf, but not all PR programmes offer this. If you need to take a taxi to the venue, there are schemes such as Dial-a-Ride, Taxicard, or voluntary car services available for you to use.

Some hospitals can provide transport services such as shuttle buses to help drive you to where you need to go.

What happens once the PR programme is completed?

The PR team running the programme will create a long-term plan for you to follow after you have finished it.

It is important that you continue doing some regular exercises after the PR programme. This will ensure you maintain the benefits and improvements you have made during the course, or even continue to improve.

The team will create a personalised exercise plan for you to follow after you have finished the course. Some PR teams will also be able to refer you onto other services to support you with progressing your exercise. However, this will depend on the area and availability of these services.

Are there any additional resources I can access about PR?

There are many resources about pulmonary rehabilitation available. Here are some we recommend checking out:

Pulmonary rehab for COPD/emphysema

Pulmonary rehabilitation is an effective non-surgical option for COPD/emphysema, as it can help you exercise your lungs and learn to breathe more efficiently.

There are various treatment options, depending on the severity of your condition. Your doctor can help you decide what is best for you.
